Custom multicomponent yarn solutions for R&D teams requiring specific
thermal, mechanical, and cost performance profiles
Can recycled PBO and PBI be combined with other high-performance fibers?
Yes. One of the greatest technical advantages of working with recycled PBO and PBI
is the ability to create multicomponent fiber blends. While virgin
fibers are often restricted to fixed, standard formats due to manufacturing
constraints, our mechanical recovery process at Hilaturas Arnau
allows us to blend these fibers with other advanced materials to engineer a
“performance cocktail” precisely calibrated to a specific end-use.
The fiber blend portfolio
We specialise in blending recycled PBO and PBI with:
Para-aramid: Adds tensile strength, cut resistance, and
structural stability — the mechanical backbone of the blend.
Meta-aramid: Adds inherent flame retardancy, dimensional
stability under heat, and comfort for garment applications.
Pre-oxidised fiber (PREOX): Provides exceptional carbonised
flame barrier performance and enhances LOI — particularly effective in
rail, aeronautical, and industrial insulation applications.
Recycled PBO + recycled PBI combined: We believe we are
currently the only spinner in the world successfully blending recycled PBO
and PBI together in a single yarn — combining PBO`s extreme thermal stability
with PBI`s thermomechanical balance in one structure.

Primary contribution
Typical blend role
Recycled PBO
Extreme thermal stability (to 600 °C),
very high tensile strength
Performance anchor — sets the thermal ceiling
Recycled PBI
Thermal barrier, arc flash resistance,
no melt/drip
Thermal barrier layer — critical for
electric arc and flash fire
Para-aramid
High tensile and cut resistance,
structural integrity
Tailored for your application: cost vs. performance
We do not offer a one-size-fits-all product. Instead, we produce blends
adapted to the precise requirements of each engineering team. Depending on your
specification, we can tune the blend to prioritise:
Maximum thermal performance: Higher PBO/PBI concentration
to achieve EN ISO 11612 Code C4 — validated for aerospace foundry and
proximity firefighting environments.
Cost optimisation: Strategic blending reduces the price per
metre significantly without sacrificing the essential protective properties
required for industrial safety certification.
Enhanced ergonomics: Yarn structure can be adjusted to make
the final fabric more flexible and comfortable — a common limitation of
rigid virgin PBO textiles that our recycled blends overcome.
At Hilaturas Arnau, we act as a technical partner for your
engineering team. Whether you need to meet a specific budget or a rigorous
safety certification, our ability to blend these rare fibers creates solutions
that virgin manufacturing cannot replicate at equivalent cost.
